Microsoft wins over fake Mac antivirus botnet - Technology - GMA News Online - Latest Philippine News: "Software giant Microsoft claimed this week to have stopped another botnet, one believed to be behind the propagation of fake antivirus software.

Richard Domingues Boscovich, a senior lawyer at Microsoft's Digital Crimes Unit, said the Kelihos botnet was taken down via "Operation b79."

"Kelihos, also known by some as 'Waledac 2.0' given its suspected ties to the first botnet Microsoft took down, is not as massive as the Rustock spambot. However, this takedown represents a significant advance in Microsoft’s fight against botnets nonetheless. This takedown will be the first time Microsoft has named a defendant in one of its civil cases involving a botnet and as of approximately 8:15 a.m. Central Europe time on Sept. 26th, the defendants were personally notified of the action," he said in a blog post.

Microsoft defends 'secure boot' for Windows 8 - Technology - GMA News Online - Latest Philippine News: "Breaking its silence on the matter, Microsoft this week defended its upcoming flagship operating system Windows 8's use of a "secure boot" policy, which some programmers said could potentially lock out other operating systems, such as Linux.

So, when we bought our bus tickets, Internet access was the top criterion in choosing which bus we would be riding for at least eight hours.

Mobile Skills Not Enough, Tech Exec Advises Developers | The Manila Bulletin Newspaper Online

Mobile Skills Not Enough, Tech Exec Advises Developers | The Manila Bulletin Newspaper Online: "MANILA, Philippines - Despite the growing success of mobile device applications, programming skills in mobile device platforms are not enough to ensure a successful long-term career for software developers. These must be complemented by service-side programming skills, according to the head of Filipino software development firm Orange & Bronze Software Labs (O&B).

During the recent DevCon Mobile Code Camp, O&B co-founder and CEO Calen Legaspi said that software programmers must not jump into the mobile device bandwagon too fast without learning the necessary development capabilities on servers.

In fact, he recommends that developers strengthen their server or client-side programming skills first then develop their software programming skills later. In particular, the more stable platforms in terms of wide usage, such as the multi-paradigm language, JavaScript and the newer version hypertext markup language 5 (HTML5)—a language for structuring and presenting content for the World Wide Web—could be starting ground for development on mobile devices.

Apple won! | The Manila Bulletin Newspaper Online

Apple won! | The Manila Bulletin Newspaper Online: "MANILA, Philippines -- And Adobe lost. When Apple introduced the iPhone and stressed that it will not support Adobe’s Flash, Adobe criticized them for not providing the full internet to its users. Adobe tried to win the consumers’ hearts, and with fingers-crossed, hoped that the iPhone will not pick-up. Unfortunately, it did.

Several iPhone iterations after, Adobe still kept pushing for Flash by partnering with the likes of Research in Motion for its Playbook tablet, and Google, for Flash on Android. Whilst it seemed to be a great offensive against Apple, the overall experience of using Flash on devices, even on the Playbook and Android, further stressed that Apple made the right decision. Flash, even optimized for devices, is just not that good, like it is on the desktop. Not only does it eat up a lot of resources, it also wasn’t as responsive as a native app.

Instead, I am talking of how the world, at least the part of it that I saw while onboard a bus bound for Bicol a few days ago, is filled with the beauty of creation.

Of course, there are the undeniable evidence of human presence and its sometimes corrupting effects. Ill-designed and occasionally ill-advised structures dot the roads and byways that the bus traversed on its way out of the metropolis to the heart of the country's more rustic and laid back environs.

Overall, however, much of the countryside has retained its sweet and comforting charms.

Third Birthday | The Manila Bulletin Newspaper Online

Third Birthday | The Manila Bulletin Newspaper Online: "MANILA, Philippines -- The 3rd Birthday is a follow-up to the Parasite Eve games of the late 1990s and early 2000s. This third-person action adventure represents a fresh start for the striking heroine Aya Brea.

Aya Brea is no stranger to strange situations. She made her debut in 1997's Parasite Eve as an NYPD cop who waged turn-based battle against mitochondrial creatures that threatened Manhattan. It's been 11 years since the last Parasite Eve game was released, though, so even many who played them may have fuzzy memories of Aya's earlier adventures.

The 3rd Birthday begins in a near-future New York that has been ravaged by creatures called Twisted. You, as Aya Brea, have been recruited by the Counter Twisted Investigation team. Your role is to use a device called the overdive system, which sends Aya's mind into the past. Through this, you will be able to see past Twisted attacks, and possess the soldiers present during that battle, and somehow change the outcome of the battles to change the present.

Faced with declining sales, the PC market needs Windows 8 | The Manila Bulletin Newspaper Online

Faced with declining sales, the PC market needs Windows 8 | The Manila Bulletin Newspaper Online: "MANILA, Philippines -- Microsoft’s next-generation operating system, Windows 8, is not just another version of the software company’s market-leading product. It marks a major, some would say radical, change for the computing platform.

With the new OS, expected to be for release in 2012, Microsoft takes a 180-degree turn, changing the way its bestselling software works and interacts with its users. From a desktop-bound platform, Windows has now become a lighter version of itself, light enough to run even on systems that are not exactly hot rod.

In fact, when Microsoft provided a peek into the beta version of the software, a first-generation netbook and some low-spec PCs were used to demo some of its capabilities and features. Imagine, a Microsoft OS running its full version on a lowly, low-capabilities netbook?

Travelling made easy (Part 1) | The Manila Bulletin Newspaper Online

Travelling made easy (Part 1) | The Manila Bulletin Newspaper Online: "MANILA, Philippines -- I love Hiro’s character in “Heroes” best because of his ability to time travel. How I wish this was possible so that situations, circumstances and events that we wished never happened or did could be avoided and undone? But then again, that would make things perfect and without challenges.

So in lieu of not being able to do a “hiro, ” I just delight in the fact that I am able TO travel and I’m blessed with a job that allows me to do just that; see new places, meet people and experience new things.

Time sort of stops when I visit new places and initially, we travel to lose ourselves; and we travel, next, to find ourselves. We open our hearts and minds, see what we can learn beyond what we read about in papers or see in pics and mags.

In experiments conducted between the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland and a laboratory in Italy, the tiny particles were clocked at 300,006 kilometers per second, about six km/sec faster that the speed of light, the researchers said.
“This result comes as a complete surprise,” said physicist Antonio Ereditato, spokesman for the experiment, known as OPERA. “We wanted to measure the speed of neutrinos, but we didn’t expect to find anything special.”

WIPO: 'Sulit' can't be a registered trademark - Technology - GMA News Online - Latest Philippine News: "In what is arguably a landmark case in local cyberspace history, a world body has rejected a complaint by Sulit.com.ph against another website which carries the domain name Sulit.ph, saying the term “sulit" is generic in nature and cannot be registered as a trademark.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency under the United Nations, issued its decision last August 19, 2011. It was picked up by a couple of blog sites but escaped the attention of the mainstream media.

The seminal case is the first domain name dispute between two local contending parties that was resolved with finality. It can be recalled that in the late 1990s, dominant carrier PLDT sued cyber-activist Gerry Kaimo for using the domain pldt.com.ph. Though filed in the local courts, the issue was never resolved with Kaimo eventually settling the case with the telco giant.
