New Internet suffix bids include ‘.lol,’ ‘bank.’ | Inquirer Technology

New Internet suffix bids include ‘.lol,’ ‘bank.’ | Inquirer Technology: "NEW YORK — If Google has its way, you won’t need “Google.com” to do your searches. You can simply go to “.Google.”
New York City wants Internet addresses ending in “.nyc,” while several companies and groups are looking to create “.doctor,” “.music” and “.bank.” Google Inc. is also seeking “.YouTube” and “.lol” – the digital shorthand for “laugh out loud.” Others are looking to attract non-English speakers with suffixes in a variety of languages.
Some 2,000 proposals have been submitted as part of the largest expansion of the Internet address system since its creation in the 1980s. These suffixes would rival “.com” and about 300 others now in use. Companies would be able to create separate websites and separate addresses for each of their products and brands, for instance, even as they keep their existing “.com” name. One day, you might go to “comedy.YouTube” rather than “YouTube.com/comedy.”

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 gets new quad-core chipset? | Ubergizmo

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 gets new quad-core chipset? | Ubergizmo: "Word on the street has it that Samsung might just want to implement the quad-core Exynos chip set inside their spanking new Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, and it seems that said rumors have been substantiated by a recently uploaded YouTube video, where the Galaxy Note 10.1 in there sported a 1.4GHz Exynos chip set (one can only make the assumption that this is similar to the one that is currently seeing action on the Galaxy S3), not to mention having it come with a pebble blue back cover finish. You will not find your eyes rejoicing though, as the resolution count remains similar as the original Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, that would mean 1280 x 800 pixels across the board. Will a quad-core chip set make you move for your credit card or wallet? Once you are done with the video above, there is always another video right after the jump for your perusal.

Larry Ellison Has Learned To Embrace Cloud Computing, Not Convinced It’s An “Incredible New Thing” | TechCrunch

Larry Ellison Has Learned To Embrace Cloud Computing, Not Convinced It’s An “Incredible New Thing” | TechCrunch: "Oracle’s Larry Ellison has acquired a reputation as a cloud computing opponent — after all, he famously called the term “complete gibberish” a few years ago. Today, however, he said, “I’m no longer resisting the name. Call it what you want.”

In fact, Ellison made it sound like he doesn’t get enough credit for starting the trend: “NetSuite was my idea. I called up Evan Goldberg and said, ‘We’re going to do ERP on the Internet.’” That, he said, was an early example of software-as-a-service, and Salesforce.com co-founder Marc Benioff (who has worked to tie his company’s identity to the cloud) copied the idea a few months later, but “in a narrow way.” (Apparently this got a smirk out of Benioff, who was in the audience.)

Ford Opens Motor City Innovation Exchange, A Showroom For Detroit Startups | TechCrunch: "The economic downturn of the last few years hit few cities as hard as Detroit. Still, the city has recently become somewhat of a startup hub in its own right and today Ford Global Technologies, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ford Motor Company that manages Ford’s intellectual property portfolio, announced that it is opening a showroom for “innovators to show off their creations to peers and potential customers.” This Motor City Innovation Exchange will be open to anyone, as a Ford spokesperson told us earlier today. The goal here is to build a marketplace for licensing technological innovation from local startups across and beyond the auto industry. The public will be able to visit and browse the technologies on display and anyone who participates (including startups, established companies, universities and individuals) can license their inventions.

Babelverse Is Out To Democratize Translation | TechCrunch

Babelverse Is Out To Democratize Translation | TechCrunch: "Babelverse won the opportunity to appear at TechCrunch Disrupt from the Startup Alley and with little notice ended up giving a slick pitch. Essentially this is a solution for universal speech translation, powered by a global community of human interpreters: it means anyone can be an interpreter. We covered it’s launch back in January but here’s a quick rundown.

Machine translation, as we know, is not reliable. So what we’re looking here is a marketplace for translation.

People practice to interpret and move up through the system, towards being more professional interpreters. Think of it as a sort of Demand Media platform for interpreting languages.

App scans faces of bar-goers to guess age, gender | Inquirer Technology

App scans faces of bar-goers to guess age, gender | Inquirer Technology: "A new app launched this weekend that will scan the faces of patrons in 25 bars across the city to determine their ages and genders. Would-be customers can then check their smartphones for real-time updates on the crowd size, average age and male-to-female mix to decide whether the scene is to their liking.
The Austin, Texas-based makers of SceneTap say the app doesn’t identify specific individuals or save personal information. But in a city known for its love of both libations and civil liberties, a backlash erupted even before the first cameras were switched on from bar-goers who said they would boycott any venue with SceneTap installed.
SceneTap’s ability to guess how old people are and whether they’re men or women relies on advances in a field known as biometrics. A camera at the door snaps your picture, and software maps your features to a grid. By measuring distances such as the length between the nose and the eyes and the eyes and the ears, an algorithm matches your dimensions to a database of averages for age and gender.

But ahead of the IPO, a debate emerged between two of the nation’s largest automakers: Does it pay to advertise on the social network?
General Motors, the nation’s largest automaker, said it would abandon Facebook ads after concluding they were ineffective. At the same time, Ford reaffirmed its commitment to Facebook, saying their relationship was stronger than ever.
The direct financial impact of GM’s move is minimal for Facebook, but the decision drew attention to the network’s advertising system, which some observers regard as immature.

The modification I refer to stated that Facebook wanted to acknowledge a trend; that trend is the declining ARPU (average revenue per user) being seen in its current quarter.
