Google software engineer Kathleen Ko said that while Circles let members control who they share with, the new feature lets them decide who can notify them.
"Now you can decide who can notify you on Google+!" she said in a post on her Google+ account.
Ko said the control is accessible at https://plus.google.com/settings/plus.
